This category runs on jargon that nobody explains. Here is all of it, in plain language, with the things that will bite you marked.
The manufacturer's published table of which part goes on which machine. It is the primary source. If a claim is not in one, it is somebody's opinion.
The tensile member inside a CVT belt. What actually carries the load; the rubber just grips.
The CVT returning to a lower ratio when load rises, like a downshift. Poor back-shift feels like the machine bogging in a corner or on a hill.
A new CVT belt wants gentle, varied running for the first stretch — no wide-open throttle, no towing — to let the faces seat. Ultimax and Dayco both publish a procedure; skipping it shortens the belt's life.
The result of sustained slip: a glazed, hard belt face and a smell you do not forget. Usually a clutching problem, not a belt problem.
How far the belt can be pushed down between the clutches with a set force. It is the quick check for whether the belt is the right one and the centre distance is right.
The belt turning inside the sheaves instead of driving them. It generates heat fast, glazes the belt faces, and ends in a burst belt.
Off-trail in deep, loose snow. Control matters more than bite; carbide length goes up, stud count often does not.
Continuously variable transmission. A rubber belt between two variable-width pulleys, with no fixed gears. Every sled and almost every side-by-side uses one.
Tungsten carbide, the hard insert brazed into a stud tip or a runner. It is what actually cuts ice; the steel around it is just a holder.
Also called a wear bar or wear rod. The replaceable bar under the ski with a carbide segment. Studs without matching carbide give you a sled that hooks up at the back and will not steer at the front.
A matched set of flyweights, springs and usually a helix, calibrated together for a machine, a tire size and an elevation band. The parts are not interchangeable between kits.
A Camso track whose lugs carry small traction teeth standing about 0.100" above the lug. Woody's size studs from the most prominent lug height: the 1.352" Cobra takes a 1325 series, the 1.600" Cobra a 1575.
A belt with notches cut in its inner face so it can bend tighter and run cooler.
A table mapping one manufacturer's part number to another's, or to a machine. Useful and frequently wrong — check it against the original chart.
A part we could price but could not verify fitment for. It stays out of the catalogue and goes in deferred.csv with the reason. A short honest catalogue beats a long one that lies.
A Woody's runner with two carbide rails instead of one, for more bite in hardpack. Sold individually, not as a pair — check the quantity before you order.
A support plate that carries two studs on one piece of aluminium. Used in higher-count patterns, where Woody's publish a split of single and double plates rather than all singles.
The consumable in the middle of all of it. Sized by length and top width for a specific clutch pairing — a belt that is a quarter-inch off changes your ratio range.
The primary. Bolted to the crankshaft, it squeezes the belt outward as engine speed rises. Flyweights and the primary spring set when and how fast it does that.
The secondary. Takes the drive from the belt and feeds the chaincase or gearbox. Its helix and spring set how hard it resists opening, which is what holds belt tension under load.
Thinner air makes less power, so a clutch calibrated at sea level over-revs or bogs in the mountains. Kits are published for elevation bands for exactly this reason.
The engine speed at which the drive clutch first grips the belt and the machine starts to move.
The statement that a specific part is correct for a specific machine, year and configuration. It is the product in this category. Everything else is logistics.
A runner whose host bar has a flat upper face, which spreads load across the ski keel. Woody's Extender Trail III, Trail Blazer IV, Executive and Maverick are all flat-tops.
The pivoting mass inside the drive clutch. Heavier weights shift sooner and hold lower rpm; lighter weights hold higher rpm. Adjustable flyweights let you change that without buying another kit.
The fixed ratio after the CVT — chaincase sprockets on a sled, gearbox on a side-by-side. Bigger tires effectively raise it.
Snow compacted to nearly ice. Where an under-studded sled feels fine until it does not.
A runner with a hardfaced strip instead of carbide. Protects the keel without adding steering bite — used when the studs are doing the work.
The ramped cam inside the driven clutch. Its angle decides back-shift behaviour — how quickly the clutch returns to a lower ratio when the machine sees load.
The steel bar a carbide segment is brazed to. When people say a runner is "worn out" they usually mean the carbide is gone, not the bar.
The replaceable plastic strip on the bottom of each slide rail that the track runs on. It is cooled by snow; run it on bare ice and it melts.
Ski-Doo's factory pre-studded track option. The stud pattern is already in it; adding to it is a different job from studding a bare track.
Competition on prepared ice. Stud counts and carbide lengths here are outside anything published for trail use.
How tall the rubber paddles on your track are, measured from the track base to the top of the lug. It is the single number that decides stud length, and it is a property of the track, not the sled — the same model is sold with two or three different tracks.
Powersports model years start the previous autumn. A "2025" sled was likely built and sold in 2024.
The answer you will get from both calculators when the manufacturer has not published the case you asked about. It is a real answer, and it is the whole reason these tools are worth trusting.
The manufacturer's own number for a part. Aftermarket suppliers cross-reference to it, which is how you check an aftermarket claim.
The manufacturer's own published Canadian list price. Dalton are the only supplier in this catalogue who publish one.

How far the carbide tip stands proud of the lug once the stud is torqued. Woody's publish an optimum range of .250"–.375" and a hard maximum of 3/8". Past that you get premature track wear, tunnel damage, and less control rather than more.
Ski-Doo's deep-snow track family, 2.5" lug and taller. Not studded — the lug is past the published penetration window.

What happens when a stud tears out through the track under load. Usually caused by the wrong support plate, no support plate, or a stud too long for the lug.
A common Ski-Doo trail track, usually 1.25" lug.
The number of lengthwise rows in a published stud pattern. More rows means more bite and more drag.
A sprung carbide finger that drags behind the rail to throw snow into the heat exchanger when there is not enough loose snow to cool it. Essential on ice and hardpack.

The conical faces of a clutch that the belt rides between.
A lightweight track construction. Takes single-ply studs and Grand Digger support plates only. Ski-Doo call their single-ply stud the Phantom stud; it is Woody's Grand Master.
A plastic or steel skid on the ski bottom, protecting the areas the runner does not cover. Woody's call theirs the Navigator.
The aluminium rail the track slides along, carrying the hyfax.
A narrower Dooly, for skis with a shallow keel.
A sled ordered in spring for the next season, often with track and shock options unavailable later. It is why two identical-looking sleds take different studs.
How much force a spring gives per unit of compression, usually quoted as two numbers — one at the installed height, one at full shift.
A steel bolt with a carbide tip that passes through the track and bites ice. Sold by series, which encodes its length.
Where the studs go across and along the track. Woody's publish a pattern per track length, pitch and stud count, and sell a template that marks it. Drilling a track freehand is how tracks get ruined.
Woody's part-number series — 1005, 1075, 1175, 1325, 1450, 1575. The number is the length in thousandths of an inch from the top of the backing plate to the tip. It is not the overall stud length: series 1325 has an overall length of 1.740".
A track with studs fitted. Legal on most Canadian trails, restricted on some; check your provincial association before the season.
Also called a backer. The plate on the inside of the track that spreads the stud load so the stud head does not pull through the rubber. Single-ply tracks take Grand Digger plates; two-ply take Digger plates.
The belt's width across its widest face. With length, it is the number that decides fitment.
Two-ply studs go to 22 ft-lb, single-ply to 30 ft-lb. Aluminium lock nuts cannot be reused once they have been run down.
The spacing between drive lug centres, usually 2.52", 2.86" or 3.00". It decides which stud template fits and how many studs a given track length can take.
How many layers of fabric the track carcass has. Single-ply tracks are lighter and need studs with a shorter shoulder and a wider head; two-ply tracks need the other kind. The two are not interchangeable, in either direction.
Groomed and compacted trails, some bare ice. Woody's lowest published stud count and shortest carbide.
The variant of a model — X, X-RS, Adrenaline, Sport. It often changes the track, and changing the track changes the studding.
A guard along the inside of the tunnel that stops studs from chewing the heat exchanger or the tunnel itself. Woody's publish an OEM part number for most sleds; check clearance before the first ride.
The heavier, more common track construction. Woody's data calls it "double" ply. Takes two-ply studs and Digger support plates.
Work: ditch lines, roads, fields, ice. Predictable surfaces and a lot of them, so wear parts get replaced on a schedule.
On this site, it means the machine-to-part link came from a manufacturer's published application data and nothing else. Not from product copy, not from a retailer's listing, not from a pattern we spotted.
The same thing as a carbide runner. Stud Boy use this name; Woody's mostly say runner.
