Replacing hyfax

Why it is a ten-minute job, why it matters more on ice, and why we do not sell them yet.

Hyfax is the plastic strip the track slides along. It is cooled by snow. Run a
sled on bare ice or a plowed road and it melts, and what melts next is the slide rail.

Checking it

Most rails have a wear indicator groove. When it is gone, the hyfax is done. Check both sides —
they rarely wear evenly — and check early in the season rather than in March.

The job

  1. Lift the back of the sled and take the weight off the track.
  2. Loosen the track tension, then the rear idler bolts.
  3. Drive the old hyfax out from the front with a block of wood and a mallet. It comes out the back.
  4. Slide the new one in the same way. Cold plastic fights; warm it first.
  5. Refit the retaining bolt, set the track tension and alignment to the manual’s numbers.

If you ride ice, fit scratchers

Scratchers drag behind the rail and throw snow into the heat exchanger when the track cannot pick
any up. On hardpack and ice they are the difference between hyfax that lasts a season and hyfax that
lasts a weekend.

Why we do not sell hyfax

Because we cannot verify the fitment. Garland’s part numbers encode a profile style and a length —
23-5700 is style 23, 57.00 inches — but no manufacturer publishes the style-to-machine
chart, and the Canadian retail listings carry the part number without the machine. A wrong profile is
a slide-rail failure.

So the whole category sits in catalog/deferred.csv with the reason written down,
rather than on the shelf with a guess attached. That rule is not
negotiable here
, even when it costs us a category that would sell.
